East of Eden has finally arrived on Netflix, and this is not one of those shows you casually put on while doing something else. It demands your attention. Based on John Steinbeck’s classic novel, this seven-episode series takes us into a deeply troubled family where love, jealousy, ambition and betrayal keep passing from one generation to the next.
Directed by Garth Davis, the series brings a fresh take on the much-loved story, with a strong cast led by Florence Pugh, Christopher Abbott and Mike Faist.
What is East of Eden about?
At the centre of the story are brothers Adam and Charles Trask, whose already complicated relationship becomes even more difficult when Cathy Ames enters their lives.

And Cathy is not exactly the kind of person who brings peace wherever she goes.
Played by Florence Pugh, Cathy is mysterious, intelligent and extremely difficult to read. There is something unsettling about her from the beginning, and the show slowly reveals why she became the person she is.
The story then expands into a much bigger family saga, moving across generations and exploring how the choices of one generation can end up affecting the next.
Florence Pugh is the big attraction
Let’s be honest, Florence Pugh is one of the main reasons to watch this series.
She plays Cathy with a strange combination of charm and danger. You may not always understand her decisions, but you’ll definitely want to know what she is going to do next.
Cathy could have easily turned into a one-note villain, but the series spends time looking at her past and the experiences that shaped her. That makes the character much more complicated than simply calling her “good” or “bad.”

Christopher Abbott as Adam and Mike Faist as Charles also get plenty to work with. Their brotherly conflict forms a major part of the emotional core of the story.
Hoon Lee, Ciarán Hinds and Martha Plimpton add further depth to the sprawling cast, while Joseph Zada and Joe Anders become important as the story moves towards the younger generation.
Slow, but not boring
This is probably the biggest thing to know before starting East of Eden.
The series takes its time.
There are no constant twists every ten minutes and it doesn’t feel like a typical fast-paced thriller. Instead, it slowly builds the characters, relationships and conflicts.
So yes, there are moments where the pace feels a little slow. But once you get into the characters, especially Cathy and the Trask family, the slow-burn approach starts to work.
The visuals are beautiful
The period setting is another big plus.
The series moves between different locations and different stages of the family’s life, giving it a large, almost cinematic scale. The early-1900s setting, costumes and landscapes give the show a very distinct look.
It feels much closer to watching a big historical drama than a regular Netflix family series.
A different take on the classic story
Fans of Steinbeck’s novel should know that this isn’t simply a scene-for-scene recreation of the book.
The adaptation puts much more attention on Cathy Ames and gives her a central place in the story. It also makes some changes to the original story, giving the series its own identity.

At its heart, the show keeps returning to questions about good, evil, family and whether people are destined to repeat the mistakes of those who came before them.
Final Verdict
East of Eden is a dark, emotional and beautifully made family drama that takes its time to tell its story.
It may feel slow in places, but the performances — especially Florence Pugh — keep pulling you back in. If you enjoy serious period dramas, complicated characters and stories about dysfunctional families, this is definitely worth adding to your Netflix watchlist.
And with all 7 episodes available at once, you don’t have to wait a week to find out what happens next.
