Mother Promise Review: Dhananjaya’s Madcap Gangster Ride Is Chaotic, Quirky and Full of Surprises

Mother Promise movie review:
Mother Promise movie review

If you go into Mother Promise expecting a straightforward gangster film, you might be scratching your head for a while. This Kannada movie is all over the place — in a good way, mostly. It mixes gangster comedy, crime, bizarre characters and family emotions, and somehow turns all of that into one pretty entertaining ride.

Directed by Poornachandra Mysuru, Mother Promise stars Dhananjaya, Poornachandra Mysuru, Geetha, Vinaya Prasad, Nagabhushana, Chi Gurudutt and others. The film is now streaming on ZEE5.

The basic setup is simple enough. A gambler gets caught in a messy situation involving rival gangs, crime and a whole bunch of strange characters. But this isn’t the kind of gangster story where everyone is walking around looking serious and threatening. Here, almost every character has a funny name, a weird personality or some completely unexpected quirk.

And that’s really what Mother Promise is all about — the madness.

Dhananjaya plays Rossi, a gangster who runs a gambling operation in a fictional version of Bengaluru. He brings his usual screen presence to the role, but the film gives him plenty of room to have fun too. He’s not carrying the movie entirely on his shoulders, though. Poornachandra Mysuru is equally important, both behind and in front of the camera.

As a director, Poornachandra clearly isn’t interested in playing it safe. The film keeps throwing one odd situation after another at you. Sometimes it works brilliantly. Sometimes you just sit there wondering what exactly is happening. But once you understand the kind of film this is, you either get into the madness or you don’t.

The comedy is definitely the biggest selling point. A lot of the humour comes from deadpan one-liners and ridiculous situations rather than forced punch dialogues. Some jokes land really well, while a few others simply go over your head. That’s probably unavoidable with this kind of absurd comedy.

The film also has a surprisingly emotional side. Under all the gangsters, gambling and chaos, there’s a story about mothers, promises and the things we carry with us from childhood. That emotional thread becomes more important as the movie moves towards the climax, and it gives the craziness some actual heart.

The supporting cast has a lot of fun too. Nagabhushana, Vinaya Prasad, Geetha and the other actors fit nicely into the film’s eccentric world. There are so many characters that remembering everyone’s name might actually be harder than following the plot.

But yes, the film has its problems.

The first half can feel a little loose, and the sheer number of characters and subplots can make things confusing. Some scenes also feel longer than they need to be. The film’s deliberately illogical style won’t work for everyone either. There are moments when the screenplay feels uneven, and the editing could have been tighter.

Still, Mother Promise knows exactly what kind of entertainment it wants to be. It isn’t trying to be a serious gangster drama. It wants you to forget logic for a couple of hours and enjoy the chaos.

And when it works, it really works.

The climax is probably where the different threads come together best, bringing the comedy and emotion together without completely losing the film’s crazy tone.

Overall, Mother Promise is not a perfectly made film, but it has personality. It’s weird, loud, unpredictable and occasionally very funny. Dhananjaya and Poornachandra Mysuru are clearly having a good time, and that energy comes through.

If you enjoy offbeat Kannada comedies and don’t mind a film that throws logic out of the window, Mother Promise is worth checking out on ZEE5. If you prefer tightly structured stories, though, this one may test your patience.

Verdict: A messy but entertaining mix of gangster madness, comedy and emotion. Not for everyone, but when the humour clicks, Mother Promise is a lot of fun.
