Legend of the White Dragon Review:
Legend of the White Dragon Review

The production of superhero movies does not necessarily require having an elaborate budget and the involvement of big studios. Some times, independent movie makers decide to try and introduce something different on the silver screen. Such is the case of the movie Legend of the White Dragon which is currently available on the Lionsgate Play platform.

This American independent superhero movie features Jason David Frank, Aaron Schoenke, Jason Faunt and Rachele Brooke Smith, among others, and it mixes elements of action, masked heroism, and a tale of a man searching for his identity back. For those who are interested in superhero tales outside the realm of Marvel and DC productions, this might be of interest.

Legend of the White Dragon Story

Erik Reed, who goes by the name of the White Dragon, was once considered a great hero, but he returns to his town following a tragedy that completely ruined his life. Erik has a lot to deal with since he not only needs to make amends for the things he has done, but he also needs to restore his tarnished reputation.

This becomes even harder when Erik has to deal with the threat. Erik has to make some tough choices as he has to reconcile with his past and find out what it truly means to be a superhero.

Performances and Action

The biggest attraction here is Jason David Frank, who plays Erik Reed, the man behind the White Dragon identity. Fans who remember Frank from Power Rangers may find this film especially meaningful. This was his final film role, which gives the movie an emotional connection beyond its superhero storyline.

Aaron Schoenke, who also plays the villain Jai Katua, brings an interesting angle to the story. Jai’s personal reasons for targeting Erik add some conflict, and the film tries to make the battle between the two characters more than just a fight between good and evil.

The secondary actors consist of Jason Faunt, Rachele Brooke Smith, Michael Madsen, David Ramsey and Mark Dacascos. There are recognizable actors and fight scenes to enhance the movie, but not all characters are given sufficient screen time to develop a memorable role.

What Works and What Doesn’t?

The superhero costumes are one of the film’s stronger elements. The White Dragon and Dragon Prime have a distinctive look, and there are a few entertaining action sequences for viewers who enjoy masked heroes and hand-to-hand combat.

But it is not without its problems either. The plot involves some typical superhero elements, while some scenes have too much exposition that should not slow down the development of the plot. There are also some drawbacks of the visual effects used in the movie, which can be easily understood, but may let down those expecting from an independent film a big-budget superhero movie. Some critics also noticed some problems with the pace, dialogues and development of the characters.

Thus, it is necessary to understand how to watch Legend of the White Dragon. This is not the type of a superhero movie that uses spectacular effects and action. Its appeal is more about the characters, the costumes and the effort to create a different superhero world on an independent budget.

Is Legend of the White Dragon Worth Watching?

If you’re a Jason David Frank fan or grew up watching Power Rangers, this film may be worth a watch. Seeing Frank in his final film role gives the experience a special significance, and the superhero concept has a few entertaining moments.

But if you’re expecting a tightly written story, impressive CGI and action on the scale of Marvel or DC films, you may come away disappointed. The movie has some good ideas, but the execution doesn’t always do them justice.

Final Verdict

Legend of the White Dragon is an independent superhero film with an interesting concept, some eye-catching costumes and a meaningful final performance from Jason David Frank. It doesn’t get everything right, particularly when it comes to pacing and storytelling, but fans of the actor and old-school superhero entertainment may still find something to enjoy.

Where to Watch: Legend of the White Dragon is now streaming on Lionsgate Play.

Our Verdict: A one-time watch for Jason David Frank and Power Rangers fans, but not a must-watch for every superhero movie lover.
