HBO Max Taps David Jenkins for DC’s ‘Booster Gold’ Pilot Script

HBO Max has enlisted Our Flag Means Death creator David Jenkins to pen the pilot for its upcoming DC series, Booster Gold. Should the project move forward to a full series, Jenkins is slated to take on the role of showrunner. The announcement came just before San Diego Comic-Con on July 23, 2025, riding the wave of HBO’s The Penguin, which garnered 24 Emmy nominations. Booster Gold is shaping up to be a key addition to Warner Bros. Discovery’s DC television lineup.

The show focuses on Michael Jon Carter, a Justice League hero from Gotham City, originally crafted by Dan Jurgens. Once a promising college football player, Carter’s career derails after a gambling scandal, leading him to embrace his superhero persona, Booster Gold. Nicknamed by Ronald Reagan after a heroic act, Booster is known for his pursuit of fame and fortune, often clashing with his peers due to his self-absorbed nature.

Jenkins, celebrated for the offbeat humor of Our Flag Means Death—which Max canceled in January 2024 after two seasons—previously helmed the TBS comedy People of Earth. His involvement hints at a fresh, comedic take on the DC hero. While rumors of Kumail Nanjiani as Booster have surfaced, no casting has been confirmed. The project, which recently saw a change in showrunners, is progressing steadily but remains in early development.
