Paithalattam:
Malayalam cinema has been consistently delivering thrillers and Paithalattam is another film that tries to keep that streak alive. Directed by Vibin N. Velayudhan this crime mystery doesn’t depend on twists or over-the-top action. Instead it takes its time building suspense piece by piece until the bigger picture starts making sense.
The story unfolds at a pace and thats probably going to divide viewers. If you’re expecting something packed with twists every ten minutes this might feel a little slow.. If you enjoy mysteries where the tension grows gradually there’s enough here to keep you curious about whats really going on.
Appunni Sasi delivers a grounded performance that fits the films tone. Sunil Sukhada again proves why he’s such a dependable actor while Jayan Cherthala brings weight to his scenes. Dhanya Ananya and Kumar Sethu also do a job with the roles they’re given even if the screenplay doesn’t always give every character enough depth.
One thing the film gets right is its atmosphere. The background score and cinematography quietly work together to create a sense of unease without trying hard. Some scenes genuinely pull you in because they feel believable than dramatic.
That said, Paithalattam isn’t without flaws. The screenplay could have been tighter in the middle portion where the pacing dips a bit. A few scenes seem longer than necessary. Some of the emotional moments don’t land as strongly as they probably intended. So the final stretch manages to bring things together in a satisfying way.
What I liked most was that the movie doesn’t treat the audience like they need everything explained immediately. It leaves room for you to think and connect the dots yourself which is something many thrillers don’t do anymore.
Overall Paithalattam is an one-time watch for fans of crime mysteries. It may not become one of the thrillers to come out of Malayalam cinema but it has enough suspense, solid performances and a respectable payoff to make the journey worthwhile. Now that it’s streaming on Sun NXT it’s a recommendation if you’re in the mood for a slow-burn mystery, over the weekend.
