Amazon is flipping the script with ‘The Boyfriend’—and honestly, it sounds fascinating

The Boyfriend:

So, if you watched The Girlfriend starring Olivia Cooke, you already know how gripping that whole ride was. It definitely left a mark, and she was incredible in it. Naturally, when word got out that Amazon MGM Studios was working on a follow-up, most people figured we’d be getting a direct continuation of that exact story.

Well, think again.

Amazon just announced the sequel series, and it’s titled The Boyfriend. But instead of following the usual Hollywood playbook of dragging out the old plot until the magic wears off, they are doing something completely unexpected.

First off, it’s a total standalone story. That means a completely blank slate—new cast, new characters, and zero narrative carryover from the first show. Olivia Cooke isn’t returning, which might bum some fans out at first, but the direction they’re taking instead is worth paying attention to.

This time around, the show is going to center entirely on themes of modern masculinity.

That is a pretty heavy pivot. Going from the specific tension of The Girlfriend to a deep dive into what it actually means to be a guy in today’s world is a big swing. Usually, when TV shows try to tackle “masculinity,” it either gets way too preachy or ends up feeling incredibly dated and stereotypical. But because Amazon is backing this and treating it as a spiritual successor, there’s a really good chance they’ll handle it with some actual nuance, depth, and grit.

We don’t have a release date or any casting news just yet since the project is still in the early development stages, but it’s definitely one to keep on your radar. Flipping a successful brand into an entirely new exploration of guys navigating life, identity, and pressure is a massive gamble, but honestly, it’s exactly the kind of creative risk that makes for great television.

It’s going to be really interesting to see who they cast to lead this thing. I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for the first trailer.
