Dhanush’s ’Kara’ is currently ruling Netflix India — and a lot of theater-skippers feel guilty

It’s kind of funny how a movie can have a rough time in theaters, and then the exact second it drops on streaming, everyone suddenly acts like they were rooting for it all along. That is exactly what’s happening with Dhanush’s new movie Kara right now. It literally just landed on Netflix and boom—it’s sitting comfortably at the number one spot in India.

When it came out back in April, the general vibe was pretty mixed. People on my feed were complaining that it was almost three hours long and way too slow, so a lot of us just skipped it. But man… looking at the internet today, it’s basically just a massive wall of people apologizing to Dhanush and the director, Vignesh Raja.

What’s it actually about?
If you watched Por Thozhil a couple of years ago, you already know Vignesh Raja is a master at making your palms sweat.

This time, he takes us back to rural India in the early 90s. Dhanush plays this guy Karasaami (everyone calls him Kara) who used to be a petty thief but is genuinely trying to go straight. He’s just trying to run a small local eatery with his wife, Selli (played by Mamitha Baiju, who is honestly great in this).

Then, things go south. This incredibly corrupt bank manager—played by Jayaram, who plays the villain so well you’ll want to punch your screen—screws over Kara’s dad, traps them in debt, and takes their ancestral land. The system does what it usually does (nothing), his dad passes away from the stress, and Kara realizes being a good citizen isn’t going to get his land back. So, he decides to plan a massive, meticulous bank robbery to take back what’s theirs.

My honest take: Is it worth the three hours?
Look, I’ll be totally real with you. The first hour or so is a bit of a slow burn. It gets a little heavy on the family drama and melodrama, and you might find yourself checking your phone.

But once the actual heist prep starts? The movie completely changes gears.

The 90s Vibe: Because it’s set in the 90s, there’s no high-tech hacking, laser grids, or fancy Hollywood gadgets. It’s all low-tech, grounded, and incredibly stressful because everything relies on perfect timing and luck.

The Music: GV Prakash Kumar did the background score, and during the high-stakes scenes, the music just jacks your anxiety up to eleven.

The Cast: Aside from Dhanush carrying the emotional weight, the supporting cast is stacked. Suraj Venjaramoodu plays this relentless cop trying to piece it all together, and you’ve got veterans like K.S. Ravikumar and Karunas popping up too.

The Best Part: Whatever you do, just make sure you pay attention to the entire bank robbery sequence right before the interval. The way it’s shot and edited is brilliant. That twenty-minute stretch alone makes the whole movie worth watching.

If you’ve got nothing to do this weekend, just turn the lights off and put this on. It’s streaming right now on Netflix in the original Tamil, plus Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada dubs. Don’t listen to the early theater reviews—this one is definitely worth a watch.
