Eyes Is Here: This Malayalam Thriller Looks Straight Into the Dark Side of Love and Obsession

Eyes

There’s something unsettling about a person watching you when you have no idea they’re watching.

This very discomforting feeling forms the crux of #Eyes, the brand new SonyLIV Original Malayalam show which begins streaming today. The show is helmed by Manu Ashokan, and with an ensemble cast comprising Kani Kusruti, Saniya Iyappan, Dev Mohan, Nikhila Vimal, and Shruti Ramachandran, there’s no doubt that it’s definitely going to be among the notable Malayalam releases on the OTT platform.

The plot revolves around Tina Sebastian, a police officer portrayed by Kani Kusruti, who gets embroiled in some distressing cases of harassment of women. What initially appear to be separate incidents slowly start looking connected, pushing Tina to look deeper into what is actually happening.

And this is where Eyes seems interesting.

The series isn’t just trying to show stalking as another crime to be solved. It goes into the psychology behind it — obsession, control, fear and that very thin line between what someone calls “love” and what actually becomes dangerous behaviour.

That makes the subject uncomfortable, but also very relevant.

Kani Kusruti looks perfectly suited for this kind of role. She has that ability to make a character feel strong without making her unnecessarily loud, and Tina seems to be the kind of police officer who has to stay calm while dealing with some seriously disturbing situations.

The rest of the cast also gives the series plenty of interest. Nikhila Vimal, Saniya Iyappan, Dev Mohan and Shruti Ramachandran join Kani in key roles, giving the show a strong ensemble.

There is also a nice reunion happening behind the scenes.

Manu Ashokan is working again with writers Bobby and Sanjay, following their collaborations on Uyare and Kaanekkaane. The story is based on a concept by Anjana Nayar.

The tagline — “Watch. Defend. Protect.” — pretty much tells you what kind of series this is.

But hopefully Eyes doesn’t just rely on the subject matter to create tension. The real test will be whether it can build the suspense naturally, make us care about the characters and keep the mystery interesting across the episodes.

The good thing is, this is a subject that can hit close to home. Stalking and obsessive behaviour are often dismissed until things become really dangerous. A thriller that explores what happens before that point could make for an interesting watch if handled properly.

And with Manu Ashokan at the helm and Kani Kusruti leading the cast, there is enough here to be curious about.
