First Look: Tessa Thompson and Jon Bernthal Go Head-to-Head in Netflix’s Gripping New Thriller ‘His & Hers’

Netflix is kicking off 2025 with a psychological sucker punch, and it’s got Tessa Thompson and Jon Bernthal written all over it. The streaming giant just dropped the first look at His & Hers, a twisty limited series based on Alice Feeney’s bestselling novel, and if the source material is anything to go by, we’re in for a dark, mind-bending ride.

Set to premiere January 8, His & Hers is part murder mystery, part psychological cat-and-mouse, and 100% designed to mess with your head (in the best possible way). The story follows Detective Jack Harper (Bernthal) and news anchor Anna Andrews (Thompson), two ex-lovers who find themselves thrown back into each other’s orbit when a murder in a sleepy English village turns out to be more personal than either of them expected.

And here’s the kicker: they’re both hiding something.

The series cleverly plays with dual perspectives — hers and his — and as the investigation unfolds, the audience is left constantly questioning who’s telling the truth, what really happened, and whether either of them can be trusted. If you love an unreliable narrator, buckle up.

Tessa Thompson, fresh off her Emmy-nominated turn in Westworld, steps into Anna’s stylish-but-fragile world with the kind of commanding screen presence we’ve come to expect from her. Bernthal, meanwhile, brings his signature grit (and yes, that emotionally tortured stare) to Jack, a cop with plenty of skeletons in the closet.

This isn’t your average procedural. Think The Affair meets Gone Girl, but moodier, sexier, and packed with enough red herrings to keep you guessing until the very last episode.

The first-look photos, released today by Netflix, show Thompson in a sharp blazer and haunted expression, reporting from the scene of the crime — while Bernthal lurks nearby, drenched in rain, cigarette in hand, exuding troubled ex-boyfriend who definitely knows more than he’s letting on energy. In short: we’re in.

Directed by Jessica Yu (Fosse/Verdon, 13 Reasons Why) and written by Sarah Vaughan, the adaptation promises to stay true to Feeney’s taut, twisty prose while adding a cinematic edge that plays perfectly into the show’s chilly, claustrophobic atmosphere.

With only six episodes, His & Hers looks poised to be the next binge-worthy obsession — perfect for curling up with on a dark January weekend, lights off, volume up.

Mark your calendars: January 8. Secrets will be spilled. Lies will be told. And chances are, you’ll be hitting “next episode” before the credits even roll.
