Michael 2026 box office opening:

The film pulled in $40 million on its domestic opening day, which is a big deal on its own. But what really stands out is what that number means. It’s now the biggest opening day ever for a biopic, and also the biggest opening day of 2026 so far. Not bad for a movie that a lot of people were a little unsure about going in.
If you didn’t know, Michael is a biographical film directed by Antoine Fuqua and written by John Logan. It basically traces the life of Michael Jackson—from his early days with the The Jackson 5 in the 1960s all the way through to the Bad tour era in the late ‘80s.
One of the most talked-about things is the casting. Jaafar Jackson plays Michael as an adult, while Juliano Krue Valdi plays him as a kid. Both are making their film debuts here, which is kind of wild considering the scale of the project.

The supporting cast is pretty stacked too—Nia Long, Laura Harrier, Jessica Sula, Mike Myers, Miles Teller, and Colman Domingo all show up.
What’s interesting is that biopics don’t always open this big. They usually build over time with word of mouth. So this kind of opening suggests there was already a lot of curiosity—or maybe just people wanting to see how the film handles such a complicated and iconic figure.
Either way, it’s off to a strong start. The real question now is how it holds up over the next few days.
