If true crime and dark crime dramas are your thing, there’s something interesting landing on Netflix tomorrow.
Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story, the fourth installment in Netflix’s popular Monster anthology series, is arriving on September 17. This time, the show goes back to one of America’s most infamous murder cases and puts Lizzie Borden at the centre of the story.
The series stars Ella Beatty as Lizzie Borden, with Vicky Krieps, Charlie Hunnam, Rebecca Hall, Billie Lourd, Jessica Barden and Sarah Paulson also part of the cast.
What Is Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story About?
The story takes us back to 1892, when Lizzie Borden was accused of killing her father, Andrew Borden, and her stepmother, Abby Borden, with an axe.
The case became a huge sensation at the time and has remained a mystery for generations. Lizzie was eventually acquitted, but questions about what really happened have never completely gone away.
Netflix’s new series takes that real-life case and turns it into a dark period crime drama, exploring Lizzie’s life inside a troubled Victorian-era household and the events that lead up to the murders.
And yes, this one looks pretty intense.
Ella Beatty Leads the Series
Ella Beatty takes on the challenging role of Lizzie Borden. She has previously appeared in Feud: Capote vs. The Swans and If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, but this is easily one of her biggest roles yet.
The supporting cast is also quite packed. Charlie Hunnam plays Lizzie’s father Andrew Borden, while Rebecca Hall plays her stepmother Abby. Vicky Krieps appears as Bridget “Maggie” Sullivan, the Borden family’s live-in maid.
There’s also an interesting Monster connection with Sarah Paulson, who plays infamous serial killer Aileen Wuornos. Her character isn’t directly involved in Lizzie Borden’s story, but the series uses her as part of its exploration of Lizzie’s legacy and female violence.
The Fourth Chapter of Monster
For fans of the anthology, this is the fourth Monster story from creators Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan.
The earlier seasons focused on notorious real-life figures, and this time the franchise is taking on Lizzie Borden. Netflix describes it as the anthology’s first story centred on a female “monster.”
So, if you’ve been looking for something dark to watch this week, Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story is definitely one of the Netflix releases to keep an eye on.
The series starts streaming on Netflix on September 17, 2026.
