OTT platforms are obviously expected to deliver movies in the best possible quality these days. But sometimes, even the biggest names don’t quite get it right.
A recent discussion among home-theatre and streaming fans has once again brought this issue into focus. Netflix reportedly failed to deliver HDR and Dolby Vision presentation for Vishwanath And Sons, leaving viewers who have compatible TVs and setups wondering why the promised premium picture quality wasn’t available.
What makes the comparison interesting is what happened with Sun NXT just last week.
For DC, Sun NXT reportedly delivered the film with HDR10+, Dolby Vision as well as Dolby Atmos audio. And, more importantly, viewers say the formats were working properly rather than simply being listed as part of the title’s specifications.
That is actually a pretty big deal for people who have invested in Dolby Vision-supported TVs, soundbars, AV receivers and home-theatre systems. When the content is mastered and delivered correctly, the difference in picture and sound can be noticeable.
Netflix, of course, remains one of the biggest streaming platforms in the world and has a huge catalogue of HDR and Dolby Vision titles. But when a particular title doesn’t receive the format viewers are expecting, it can be disappointing, especially when the same audience has seen smaller or regional platforms deliver premium formats properly.
Sun NXT’s delivery of DC is therefore getting attention for a simple reason — it worked.
It also shows that OTT streaming quality isn’t always about which platform is bigger. Encoding, mastering, certification, bitrate and the way the final file is delivered all matter.
For serious home-theatre users, these details aren’t just technical jargon. HDR10+, Dolby Vision and Atmos are exactly the kind of features they look for when choosing how and where to watch a movie.
So, while Netflix may have missed the mark with Vishwanath And Sons, Sun NXT seems to have shown how it should be done with DC. And if regional OTT platforms continue paying this kind of attention to audio and video quality, that’s definitely good news for viewers.
