SIFPA Pushes Back: “Don’t Dictate Our OTT Release Timelines

SIFPA :

Things are getting a bit heated in the film industry right now, especially down south. The South Indian Film Producers Association (SIFPA) has basically said a straight-up “no” to this whole 8-week OTT window idea, and they didn’t try to soften it much either.

From what they’re saying, it’s not just about whether 8 weeks is too long or too short — it’s more about the fact that someone else is trying to decide that for them. Their stance is pretty simple: producers should get to choose when their films go to OTT, not exhibitors or any outside group.

On the other side, exhibitors have been pushing this rule because they’re worried. The thinking is, if people know a movie will show up online quickly, why bother going to the theatre? And yeah, that kind of makes sense. Theatres are still trying to get back to full strength, and shorter OTT windows probably don’t help.

But producers aren’t wrong either. A lot of money comes from digital deals now, sometimes even before a film releases. Locking everything into a fixed 8-week gap could mess up those deals. Plus, not every movie runs the same way. Some disappear after two weeks, some keep going. So forcing the same rule on all of them feels… a bit unrealistic.

What’s interesting is how direct SIFPA sounded. It didn’t feel like one of those usual careful, diplomatic statements. It was more like, “this is our call, not yours.” And you can kind of sense the frustration there.

Honestly, this whole thing just shows how messy things have become with theatres and OTT trying to coexist. Nobody really agrees on the “right” way to do it yet. And it doesn’t look like this argument is going away anytime soon.
