Suriya’s Vishwanath And Sons has officially hit theatres, and there’s already one big update for OTT viewers. Netflix has acquired the film’s digital streaming rights, so after its theatrical run, the movie will make its way to the streaming platform.
But the Netflix deal isn’t the only thing getting attention. Vishwanath And Sons is quite an unusual film for Suriya, and that’s probably what makes it worth watching.
What’s the film actually about?
Suriya plays Sanjay Vishwanath, a former international pistol-shooting champion in his 40s who is trying to make a comeback while dealing with family responsibilities and failing eyesight.
Things get complicated when Maddy, played by Mamitha Baiju, enters his life. She is much younger than Sanjay and develops feelings for him. The age difference isn’t brushed aside or treated like a small detail — it is actually one of the central conflicts of the story.
That gives the film a different flavour. It’s not the usual hero-versus-villain setup. Instead, the story seems to focus more on relationships, emotions, family and the choices people make when life doesn’t go exactly as planned.
A very different Suriya
One of the biggest highlights is Suriya himself.
The film presents him as a mature man, a father figure and a sportsman dealing with personal struggles. Even the first look of the movie got people talking, with Suriya seen holding a baby and a milk bottle — a pretty unexpected image for an actor usually associated with intense action roles.
There’s also a nice emotional side to his character, which gives Suriya room to play something quieter and more grounded.
Mamitha Baiju brings the freshness
Mamitha Baiju is another major talking point.
Her character Maddy is confident, lively and not afraid to say what she feels. Her pairing with Suriya is certainly unconventional, mainly because of the significant age gap between their characters.
That unusual relationship is one of the film’s biggest hooks. It also gives Mamitha a role that is quite different from the typical romantic heroine template.
A strong supporting cast
The film also brings together Raveena Tandon and Radhika Sarathkumar in important roles.
Raveena’s presence is particularly interesting as the film marks her return to Tamil cinema after a long gap. That alone adds another layer of curiosity around the project.
Venky Atluri’s different approach
Director Venky Atluri, known for Vaathi and Lucky Baskhar, takes a noticeably different route here.
Rather than building the film entirely around action or commercial hero moments, he appears to be leaning into emotion, family dynamics and an unconventional romance. The story has enough drama to keep things moving, but the heart of the film seems to be its characters.
And yes, there are lighter moments too. The music by G. V. Prakash Kumar adds to the film’s family-entertainer vibe, with Suriya even stepping behind the mic for one of the songs.
Why the Netflix deal matters
The movie released in theatres on August 14, 2026. Once its theatrical window is over, Netflix subscribers will be able to watch it from home. The OTT release date has not been officially announced yet.
For now, Vishwanath And Sons has plenty going for it — Suriya in a mature role, an unconventional age-gap romance, Mamitha Baiju’s fresh pairing with him, a strong supporting cast and Venky Atluri attempting something emotionally different.
It’s not trying to look like another typical Suriya mass film. And honestly, that may be its biggest selling point.
Sometimes, the most interesting films are the ones where the hero puts the action aside and simply lets the story do the talking.
