The film Sumo Didi is directed by Jayant Rohatgi. It stars Shriyam Bhagnani as Hetal Dave. Before it comes to OTT the film was shown at international festivals. These include the Tokyo International Film Festival and the New York Indian Film Festival.
The teaser for the film starts with a question. This is a question that many women have heard before. The question is: “Who will marry you if you do not lose weight?” Hetal Dave did not let this question bring her down. Instead she used it to motivate herself. The film is about her journey. Who Is Hetal Dave?
Hetal Dave is from Mumbai. She is Indias female sumo wrestler. Over the years she has become one of the sumo athletes in the country. This is a sport that has mostly been dominated by men.
Hetal Dave started liking sports when she was very young. Her father, Sudhir Dave encouraged her and her siblings to stay active. She saw her brother practicing arts and this made her interested in judo. Her family supported her. She started training in judo. Then she decided to take up the challenge of wrestling.
It was not easy for her. Many coaches did not want to train her because she was a woman. Some coaches asked her why she wanted to compete in sumo.. Hetal Dave did not give up. She kept training with the help of her father and brother. She was determined to show that she belonged in the sport.
Fighting More Than Opponents
Getting the training was just one problem. Most big sumo tournaments were held in countries. Traveling to these countries was expensive. It was hard to get sponsorships. Of encouragement she often got criticism and ridicule.
Her father and brother did not give up. They managed to get the money for her to compete in the National Sumo Championship in Estonia. This was a turning point in her career.
Hetal Dave went on to win a bronze medal at the 2015 Asian Sumo Championships. Then she won a gold medal at the 2016 National Sumo Championships in India. These achievements were milestones in her career. They showed that if you are determined you can overcome any obstacle.
For Hetal Dave success is not about winning medals. It is about having the courage to keep going no how tough things get.
