Maayabimbum:
Just watched Maayabimbum on Sun NXT and I’m kinda stuck between liking what it tries to do and being disappointed with what it actually does.
Directed by K. J. Surendar, the film stars Srikanth, Riya Sen, Delhi Ganesh, and Saranya Ponvannan — which is honestly a solid mix of talent.
The opening actually pulls you in. There’s this quiet, slightly eerie tone, like something’s off but you can’t quite place it yet. It feels like the film is setting up a psychological drama with some depth — identity, reality vs illusion, that kind of space. For a while, it genuinely works.
Then the middle portion hits… and things start to wobble.
The screenplay feels unsure of its own direction. It builds mood nicely but doesn’t know how to carry it forward. Some scenes drag like they’re stretching for meaning, while others rush past moments that could’ve actually made an impact. That imbalance keeps pulling you out.
Performance-wise, Srikanth does a decent job — he fits the role and carries that slightly confused, internalised vibe well. Riya Sen is interesting to watch, but her character feels underwritten. Delhi Ganesh and Saranya Ponvannan bring their usual natural presence, which helps ground the film a bit when it starts drifting.
Music and background score are just… there. Not distracting, not memorable either. A few moments click, but nothing that really elevates the scenes.
Visually, though, there’s effort. Some shots are actually quite neat and match the film’s slightly haunting tone. You can tell the director had a clear feel in mind — it’s just the storytelling that doesn’t fully support it.
By the end, it leaves you more confused than moved. And not in that “open to interpretation, let’s discuss” kind of way — more like “did I miss something, or did the film just not say it clearly?” feeling.
Overall, Maayabimbum isn’t a bad watch, but it’s definitely a frustrating one. There’s a strong idea hiding in there, but it never fully comes together.
If you’re into slow, mood-heavy Tamil films, you might still find something to take away. Otherwise, this one might just feel like a good concept that got lost halfway.
