Directed by S. Jayakumar Blue Star features Ashok Selvan, Shanthnu Bhagyaraj and Keerthi Pandian in roles along with Prithvi Rajan, Bagavathi Perumal, Elango Kumaravel, Lizzie Antony, Dhivya Dhuraisamy and Saju Navodaya.
Blue Star follows two cricket teams whose rivalry grows larger than the game. What begins as a match on the field turns personal as egos and old differences mix in. Blue Star spends time showing these ties of rushing straight into the games.
Ashok Selvan shines as the character. Ashok Selvan’s performance feels steady and natural in the emotional moments. Shanthnu Bhagyaraj brings the needed intensity to the rivalry. The clash between Ashok Selvan and Shanthnu Bhagyaraj is one of Blue Star’s points.
Keerthi Pandian plays a grounded role. Fits well into Blue Star’s world. The supporting actors also add to the feel of Blue Star. No one feels out of place in Blue Star’s setting.
The best part of Blue Star is its atmosphere. The cricket scenes do not feel like commercial sports films. Blue Star shows rawness and the local surroundings, friendships and tensions make the matches more engaging.
Blue Star also has some parts. Some emotional beats stretch a little. The second half could have been tighter. If you expect cricket action Blue Star may feel slower than you expect.
Blue Star says more than who wins the match. Blue Star examines how social differences and pride affect friendships and chances. That gives Blue Star’s drama weight.
The Telugu version works because the core feelings are easy to connect with. You do not need to be a cricket fan to understand the characters and their conflicts.
Overall Blue Star is a sports drama with strong acting and a realistic setting. Blue Star is not perfect. The pacing could improve, but Blue Star’s emotional side makes it worth watching.
