Sree Vishnu’s Comrade Kalyan is now streaming on Amazon Prime, giving viewers who missed its theatrical run a chance to watch the film from home. The movie takes a rather unusual route by mixing a Naxalite backdrop with comedy, romance and plenty of fun moments.
Sree Vishnu is known for choosing different stories and bringing his own style of comedy to them. With Comrade Kalyan, the makers have tried something slightly different. But does the film work as a complete entertainer on OTT?
Comrade Kalyan Story
The story is set in the 1990s, around the Andhra-Odisha border. Kalyan (Sree Vishnu) is a young man with limited education who runs a theatre in the area after taking it on lease.
At the same time, IPS officer Georgekutty (Shine Tom Chacko) arrives in the region as part of the operation against Naxalite groups operating in the forests. A conflict continues between Georgekutty and the group led by Master (Sai Chand).
Things take a different turn when Sitara Devi (Mahima Nambiar), an Odia girl, arrives in the village with her parents. Kalyan falls in love with her after an unexpected incident involving her mother Saraswathamma (Radhika Sarathkumar).
Sitara’s family is struggling financially. Wanting to help the woman he loves, Kalyan decides to find a way to get her family out of their problems. With the help of his friend Dubai Babu (Satya), he takes a route that completely changes his life.
The simple theatre owner slowly becomes Comrade Kalyan and eventually lands on the police’s most-wanted list.
What connects Kalyan to the Naxalite groups? Why is Sitara’s family in trouble? And how does the conflict between the police and the rebels finally come to an end? The rest of the story answers these questions.
How Is Comrade Kalyan?
The moment you hear words like Naxalites, police operations and encounters, you may expect a serious political drama. But Comrade Kalyan goes in a completely different direction.
Despite its serious-looking backdrop, the film is primarily designed as a comedy entertainer. The movie does not spend too much time discussing the ideology or politics behind the conflict. Instead, it uses the setting mainly as a stage for humour.
The first half moves through Kalyan’s love story, his attempts to impress Sitara and several comic situations. The entertainment level gets a boost once Satya enters the story as Dubai Babu. His English love-letter episode is one of the funnier portions.
Upendra Limaye also adds to the comedy after entering as Bishwas.
The interval sequence brings an interesting twist and changes the direction of the story. After the interval, the film moves into the forests, with guns, rebels and police operations coming into the picture. Even here, the makers continue to maintain the comedy track.
Some situations may not stand up to serious logical scrutiny. But the film keeps moving quickly enough that viewers may not spend too much time questioning them.
There are also some funny parts that star Vennela Kishore and Sreekanth Ayyangar. There are many dialogues that refer to the current topics and popular celebrities, and they were made for fun.
However, there is a message in this film that comes with the climax of the story, but it is not as funny as some of the previous scenes of the comedy.
Performances
First of all, it should be said that Sree Vishnu is one of the major strengths of the film. He is quite relaxed playing Kalyan and delivers comedy well enough without any strain. The best of his comic dialogs can be seen during the dialogs with Satya and Sudarshan.
Satya appears in the second half of the film but he becomes an important part of its comedy.
Mahima Nambiar receives not much space as the leading lady of the film, but she looks good in the songs.
There is a big list of other actors in the film including Radhika Sarathkumar, Brahmaji, Raghu Babu, Upendra Limaye, Vennela Kishore, Murali Goud, Prabhas Sreenu, Sreekanth Ayyangar, Shatru, Sai Chand, and others.
Shine Tom Chacko, however, does not get a role that leaves much of an impression.
Technical Aspects
Sai Sreeram’s cinematography is one of the positives. He captures both the village setting and forest portions effectively.
Vijay Bulganin’s songs are decent and fit the mood of the film. The background score is okay.
The dialogues and writing support the comedy well, while director Janakiram Marella handles the film with confidence. The production values are also good.
Comrade Kalyan OTT Verdict
Comrade Kalyan is not a serious Naxalite drama despite its setting. It is basically a comedy entertainer that uses a serious backdrop to create humorous situations.
The film works best when Sree Vishnu, Satya and the supporting comedians are on screen. The lack of logic in a few portions and an underwhelming climax are its drawbacks.
But if you are looking for a light Telugu entertainer to watch on OTT without expecting a serious political drama, Comrade Kalyan on Amazon Prime is worth giving a try.
Our Take: A comedy-driven entertainer with a serious-looking backdrop that mostly works because of Sree Vishnu and its humour.
