Derby Review — “Football, Friendship & Full-On Chaos… This One Has Heart

Derby Malayalam Movie Review:

Derby Malayalam Movie Review

Malayalam cinema has been quietly dropping a lot of grounded youth dramas lately, and Derby fits right into that lane. Directed by Sajil Mampad, the film doesn’t try too hard to be stylish or “mass.” It just tells a simple story with raw energy, local flavor, and a bunch of flawed youngsters trying to survive life through football.

At its core, Derby is about friendship, ego, survival, and that small-town obsession with football that almost feels bigger than life itself. The movie has that dusty-ground realism — sweaty matches, random fights, emotional outbursts, cheap tea shops, loud friends — all of it feels familiar in a good way.

Adam Sabiq does a solid job carrying the emotional side of the film. He feels natural on screen, not overly “actor-ish,” which actually helps the movie. Sagar Surya brings good intensity and attitude, while Al Ameen adds energy to the group dynamics. The chemistry between the boys is honestly one of the biggest strengths here — they genuinely feel like local friends who grew up together.

Jasnya Jayadeesh gets some decent moments, though the film mostly stays focused on the male friendships and football rivalry. Johny Antony and Abu Salim add experience to the cast, while Shine Tom Chacko pops in with his usual unpredictable screen presence.

The movie definitely has rough edges. Some scenes stretch longer than needed, and a few emotional moments don’t fully land. You can also feel the low-budget limitations here and there. But weirdly, that roughness also gives Derby some charm. It never feels fake or over-manufactured.

What works most is the atmosphere. The football sequences are messy, aggressive, emotional — exactly how local turf matches actually feel. There’s tension, pride, and that “prove yourself” mentality running through the whole film.

This isn’t a perfect sports drama. But it’s honest, loud, emotional, and rooted in real people. If you like Malayalam films that feel local and unfiltered instead of overly cinematic, Derby is worth a watch.
