Eyes Web Series Review: When Love Turns Into Obsession, This Malayalam Thriller Gets Dark on SonyLIV

Eyes Web Series Review:

There are some thrillers that are purely made to entertain you, and then there are shows that leave you slightly uncomfortable even after the episode ends. Eyes, the new Malayalam psychological thriller on SonyLIV, falls somewhere in the second category.

Directed by Manu Ashokan, Eyes deals with stalking, obsession, toxic relationships and the kind of behaviour that is often casually passed off as “love”. And honestly, that makes the series feel a lot more disturbing because most of what happens here doesn’t feel completely unfamiliar.

The story follows a team of police officers and mental-health professionals who come together for a special project called Eyes. The idea is to use technology to monitor dangerous stalkers and hopefully stop situations from turning into serious violence or even murder. The team gets involved with different cases, and that’s where the real drama starts.

What I liked about Eyes is that it doesn’t try to make stalking look romantic or exciting. It shows how obsession can slowly turn into control, manipulation and violence. The cases also give the series enough variety instead of making it feel like the same story repeated seven times.

Performances

The performances are one of the biggest strengths here.

Kani Kusruti, Nikhila Vimal and Shruti Ramachandran get characters with some real depth, and they carry a good portion of the emotional weight of the series. Kani in particular gets a role that has both professional and personal conflicts, while Nikhila brings a lot of intensity to her character.

Dev Mohan also makes an impression in a role that is quite different from the usual romantic hero image. The supporting cast adds a lot too, especially in the individual cases.

The series is clearly designed around its female characters, which is refreshing. They aren’t just there to support the male characters or become victims in the story. They actually drive the investigation and the narrative.

Does the thriller work?

Mostly, yes.

The biggest advantage of Eyes is its subject. There is always an uneasy feeling because you know the seemingly normal behaviour of some characters can turn dangerous very quickly.

But the pacing isn’t perfect. The series takes some time to settle in, and with seven episodes running around 50 minutes each, it can feel slightly stretched in places. Some portions work much better than others.

Still, once the individual stories start connecting with the larger idea behind the Eyes project, the series becomes much more engaging.

Final Verdict

Eyes isn’t a perfect thriller, and it does take a little patience in the beginning. But the subject matter, strong performances and the way it approaches stalking without romanticising it make the series worth checking out.

The best thing about the show is that it doesn’t just ask “Who is the stalker?” It also asks why these relationships become toxic, how control gets normalised and whether something can be done before things reach the point of no return.

If you like serious Malayalam thrillers with psychological and social themes, Eyes is definitely worth adding to your SonyLIV watchlist.
