Mass Maharaja Ravi Teja is known mostly for his energetic commercial entertainers, but it has been a while since we saw him in a relatively natural and emotionally driven role. Now, his latest film Irumudi, directed by Siva Nirvana, is streaming on Netflix.
The film brings together family emotions, a crime thriller setup and a strong social theme, with the relationship between a father and daughter at its centre. So, does Irumudi offer something different from Ravi Teja’s usual films? Here’s our OTT review.
Irumudi Story
Trinath (Ravi Teja) is a simple banana farmer living in a remote village near Seeleru. He is a devoted Ayyappa follower and observes the Ayyappa Deeksha every year for the sake of his beloved daughter Manikanta (Baby Nakshatra).
Trinath and his wife Kaveri (Priya Bhavani Shankar) have raised their daughter to be fearless. He always tells her not to be afraid of anything and to share whatever she sees or hears with him.
Things take a disturbing turn when Manikanta comes to know about something happening at her school and tries to tell her father about it. Meanwhile, several suspicious incidents begin unfolding in and around the village.
What exactly does Manikanta discover? What is happening around the village and the school? And how does Trinath eventually uncover the truth? The answers form the core of Irumudi.
How Is Irumudi?
It can be thought that the movie Irumudi is an emotional father-daughter movie but things turn out differently in the movie. Elements such as crime, suspense and social issues are brought into the movie slowly.
Another interesting thing about the movie is the Ayyappa angle that has been brought into the movie. It attempts to make sure that the character of Ravi Teja has been kept connected with the story line of the movie.
Father and daughter angle has been one of the strongest angles in this movie. Trinath treating every girl as a daughter of his own and Manikanta confiding all her secrets in her father are two of the most interesting scenes in this movie.
The mysterious deaths of young girls, the suspicious gang operating near the forest, the developments at the school and the growing threats around Trinath keep the suspense moving. However, the lack of a strong police presence despite everything happening around the village feels somewhat convenient and cinematic.
The second half is where Irumudi becomes more engaging. The twists and turns pick up pace, while the emotional portions become much stronger. The climax, in particular, delivers the emotional impact the film has been building towards.
One of the film’s important messages is about raising girls without fear and teaching them to be confident and courageous. The director brings this theme into the story without making it feel completely separate from the thriller narrative.
Performances
Ravi Teja is a major positive for Irumudi. While his trademark mass appeal is still visible, the character doesn’t feel completely disconnected from the story. He fits comfortably into the role of Trinath and handles the emotional scenes particularly well.
His scenes with Baby Nakshatra are among the film’s strongest moments. The pre-climax and climax portions also give Ravi Teja plenty of room to showcase his emotional side.
Priya Bhavani Shankar is convincing as Kaveri, while Baby Nakshatra makes a strong impression as Manikanta. The child actor brings innocence and emotion to the role, and her scenes with Ravi Teja work well.
Saikumar, Shwasika, Ajay Ghosh and Ramesh Indira also play important roles and contribute effectively to the story.
Technical Aspects
GV Prakash Kumar’s music works well with the film’s devotional and emotional setting. The songs associated with the Ayyappa backdrop add to the atmosphere, while the background score supports the thriller portions and emotional scenes.
Vishnu Sharma’s cinematography is another highlight. The Seeleru surroundings are captured beautifully, and the lighting in the suspenseful sequences adds to the mood.
Siva Nirvana’s writing is the film’s main driving force. Although a few portions may feel slightly cinematic or convenient, the director manages to bring the intended emotions to the screen effectively.
Irumudi OTT Verdict
Irumudi is not a typical Ravi Teja mass entertainer. It combines a father-daughter story with crime, suspense, devotion and a socially relevant theme. The first half takes some time to settle, but the second half and emotional climax make the film more engaging.
