It’s time for the new Vishal movie, and surprisingly he himself is directing it. It has been streamed in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam on Prime Video.
And to start off, Magudam does have some good elements.
Magudam features Vishal, Anjali and Dushara Vijayan in lead, with Yogi Babu, John Vijay, V. Jayaprakash, Vamsi Krishna and VJ Jhansi in supporting roles. There are enough actors in it and yes, some of them have played their part well in the film.
Well, it is not like Vishal is an unfamiliar face anymore. If you’ve been following his career from the start, then you’ll know what you will get from him — he is a man of attitude and action. So basically, he does justice to the part he is playing here.
Talking about the other actors, the one to catch your eyes immediately would be Dushara Vijayan as she has brought something fresh into the film. Anjali has also done good job here and then there are also the other actors to lighten up the mood of the film sometimes when it becomes heavy.
However, the most serious drawback of Magudam lies in its inability to sustain a consistent pace.
At times, it works perfectly fine and manages to engage one with its plot. And then at some other point, the film gets slow and it starts becoming clear when will the movie be heading towards an essential plot point. A tighter screenplay would have certainly made the entire viewing experience much better.
Another point worth mentioning here is the direction by Vishal. While there were certain scenes that worked out perfectly fine due to the effective staging and action, there could have been some more control over the screenplay and pacing.
All in all, it cannot be denied that Magudam is not a total disaster either. The film has enough entertaining moments and satisfactory performances to make it a good choice for an OTT outing.
And with the availability of the film in four languages, it gives Magudam the opportunity to appeal to a larger audience base through Prime Video.
Final Verdict
Magudam may not be a perfect movie, but it surely has got enough elements if one wants to watch an entertaining Tamil film. Vishal’s performance, Dushara’s act, along with other cast members, makes it quite engaging despite some loose screenplay.
So, if you have been looking for something different to watch on Prime Video this weekend, Magudam is surely worth a try. It just doesn’t offer anything too different.
Verdict: A good enough one-time watch on OTT.
