Matka King:
just finished watching Matka King on prime and idk… I have mixed feelings tbh
like, the setup is actually pretty interesting. that whole matka gambling world — risky, shady, people trying to survive — it pulls you in at first. and Vijay Varma… yeah he carries the film for the most part. he just has that vibe where even when nothing much is happening, you still wanna watch him. doesn’t feel try-hard or loud, just very natural.
but the movie itself? a bit all over the place.
first half is honestly good. not perfect, but it keeps you hooked. you get into the characters, the tension builds slowly, and you’re like okay this might go somewhere strong. then second half comes in and it kinda… loses focus. scenes feel stretched, some moments that are supposed to hit hard just don’t. you can see what they were going for, but it doesn’t fully land.
kritika kamra is fine, but her role feels half-written. like she’s there, she does her part, but you don’t really feel much for her character. sai tamhankar actually leaves more of an impact in less time. gulshan grover is just doing his usual thing, nothing surprising but works.
since it’s Nagraj Manjule, you expect that raw, grounded storytelling — and yeah, it’s there in bits. the world feels real, not glamorized, which is nice. but at the same time, it doesn’t hit as hard as his previous stuff. feels a bit toned down, like it never fully commits.
also pacing is a bit of an issue. you start checking how much time is left towards the end… not a great sign.
overall, not a bad film. just frustrating because it could’ve been much better. it has the right ingredients but doesn’t fully come together.
still… if you like slow, character-driven crime dramas, you might enjoy it. just don’t expect something super tight or impactful. it’s more like… decent one-time watch.
