Sumo Didi Review:

Sports movies usually come with a familiar formula. An underdog, a big struggle, a few setbacks and then the final victory. Sumo Didi follows some of that pattern, but its story has an interesting hook — it is inspired by the real-life journey of Hetal Dave, India’s first and only professional female sumo wrestler.
The Hindi sports biographical drama is now streaming on ZEE5, and if you enjoy stories about people fighting against the odds, this one deserves a look.
A Woman Takes on a Man’s World
Directed by Jayant Rohatgi, Sumo Didi tells the story of Hetal and her decision to move from judo into the completely different world of sumo wrestling.
That decision itself isn’t easy. She has to deal with financial problems, questions from people around her and, more importantly, the constant judgment that comes with being a woman in a sport traditionally dominated by men.
The film also doesn’t shy away from the body-shaming angle. Hetal’s appearance becomes another thing people feel entitled to comment on. Instead of simply ignoring all of it, the story shows how these experiences become part of her fight.
The Japan Chapter Adds More Weight
One of the interesting things about Hetal’s tale is her visit to Japan where she receives tough training in the traditional form of fighting known as sumo.
The fact that Hetal finds herself in a completely new environment and undergoes training in a sport which has deep roots in the Japanese culture is what gives another edge to the film. Physical training may be quite tough but psychological stress can never be overlooked.
In fact, the film proves to be the most successful when it focuses on smaller challenges without attempting to dramatize everything into victory.
Shriyam Bhagnani Stars in the Movie
As Hetal, Shriyam Bhagnani is responsible for carrying the entire movie on her shoulders. Her portrayal is genuine especially in those sequences which show how Hetal deals with rejections, criticisms and self-doubts.
Chaitanya Sharma, Piyush Mishra, Aalok Mehta, Komal Chhabria and Puja Sarup support the lead actor.
The performances manage to keep the movie rooted without making it a typical motivational sports movie.
Does Sumo Didi Work?
For the most part, yes.
Sumo Didi may not completely reinvent the sports-biopic formula, and some portions could have been sharper. But the real-life story at its centre is strong enough to keep you interested.Does Sumo Didi Work?
For the most part, yes.
Perhaps Sumo Didi doesn’t revolutionize the biopic template of sports movies, but there are certainly parts of it that could have been done better. However, the true-life tale that lies at the heart of it all is compelling enough.
What makes the film appealing is that Hetal isn’t only fighting opponents inside the ring. She is also fighting people’s expectations, financial limitations and the idea that certain sports simply aren’t meant for women.
That makes her journey more relatable than the usual sports victory story.

Final Verdict
Sumo Didi is a simple and inspiring sports drama built around an unusual real-life story. It has its predictable moments, but Hetal Dave’s journey gives the film enough heart.
If you like sports biopics, underdog stories or films about people breaking social barriers, Sumo Didi is worth checking out on ZEE5.
