While some comedians only make us laugh, some comedians make us laugh while at the same time leaving us questioning our ability to relate with their humor. One such comedian is Sumukhi Suresh whose first standup special titled Hoemonal has been streamed on Netflix.
From its title, it is clear that this special show will deal with hormones, emotions, relationships and the complicated matter of life. In all the works Sumukhi has done before, the comic has been known for having the ability to find humor in awkward experiences. The same trend continues with this new special which is both personal, uncomfortable and even ridiculous.
The success of the special is based on the ability of the comedian to have a unique stage presence. What makes her special is not her effort to ensure each and every joke is going to be an instant viral joke but rather her ability to take common observations, add to them her own brutally honest opinion and deliver it with her own unique style.

It becomes even more relevant when she discusses all the emotional turmoil that can be caused by relationships and the expectations that we have from ourselves. It’s always comforting to hear someone joke about things that everyone tries to suppress inside of themselves. Of course, some parts will make you giggle and feel awkward at the same time. But this is exactly what this movie is about.
To be fair, this special isn’t entirely full of hilarious parts. There are a couple of moments that can leave you feeling like it was too slow or a bit inconsistent. However, if you are hoping for one solid joke after another that will make you crack up, there will be some less enjoyable bits here and there. Also, some jokes can be very subjective to your own sense of humor.
Sumukhi Sarge is directed by Nishant Nayak who makes sure that the spotlight never leaves the comedian and her performances.
In sum, Hoemonal is like watching a brutally honest friend who has something to say and says things that people want to say but do not. It is funny, sometimes awkward, and always candid, although not all of the jokes hit the spot.
Final verdict: If you enjoy conversational humor and observations made by an honest person, watch Hoemonal. Not everybody will appreciate it, but Sumukhi Suresh adds enough character and humor to make the film enjoyable.
